Feature request: versioning treated as fast backup

Post by markbelli »

Hi,

currently I am backing up 45000 files to a S3 drive.
Using "fast backup" is the only feasible option, since a full destination scan takes approx 90 minutes.

However "versioning" is not being treated as efficently by syncback.
After having implemented a 365 days - 3 versions option, the "versions" scan takes 150 minutes (even with the "fast backup" option)

So clearly the program can build a database of the destination drive and correctly perform a fast backup.
Why is not the same principle being applied to versioning?

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes, SyncBackPro does not save the details of version files in Fast Backup database. Therefore, in a fast backup profile, when a backup file has to updated (or deleted) SyncBack needs to scan the $SBV$ sub-folder, that contains the version files of that live backup file. In addition, as stated in the help file > Versioning settings page:

Q: Can versioning be used with Fast Backups?

A: Yes, but it can greatly reduce the performance gains you get with Fast Backup. If your profile is configured to display the Differences window then it is recommended you switch off this option as displaying the Differences window forces SyncBack to scan every folder to see which versions are available for each file.

That means, if a profile is configured to display Differences Window then SyncBack scans all the $SBV$ folders on destination to retrieve the version files for each file (instead of just scanning the $SBV$ folder/s corresponding to the changed files), hence scan time in such cases, increases substantially when compared to unattended runs (e.g. scheduled runs).

However, I will pass your request to the relevant department for further review and consideration.

Thank you.
