Confused about settings for "exact mirror"?

Post by rsn8887 »

I have a simple task: I want to create an exact mirror of a FAT32 USB stick. And, yes, of course I want the mirror drive to correctly reflect any changes in file attributes and creation/modification dates on future runs. It should be an exact mirror.

To my surprise, Syncback Pro seems to not allow me to do this simple task, at least not easily. For example, when I make a backup using the default "mirror options", the file and folder attributes in the destination are not the same as in the source after the backup is done.

I looked into the help but it refers to some obscure expert options to "copy sub-folder and file attributes", which in my version of Syncback says is "only valid for NTFS." I have FAT32 drives. Also, the help refers to some other "compare/set attributes" options in multiple places that I cannot find.

I don't understand why such a simple task should require so many manual and confusing "expert" option adjustments.

Is there a simple and quick preference option or saved profile I can simply load into my Syncback to enable this "exact mirror"? Preferably I would like a profile produces exact mirrors both for FAT to FAT and NTFS to NTFS mirrors.

Hmm I have found the freeware program "HDD Raw Copy Tool" by HDDGuru. It does make an exact mirror using sector-by-sector copy but it is limited to copying between drives with identical capacity. Interestingly, it reports a total time of just one hour for 256 Gb over USB 3.0, while Syncback Pro claimed it needed 10 days for the same task. And I already optimized the profile so nothing is listed under slow performance warnings...

I must be missing something.

Hi,

Please export your profile configuration (select the profile from SyncBackPro's main-interface > right click > Export Profile) and send it to [email protected] for further assistance.

Thank you.
