Question: Will accessing offline files in OneDrive cause them to download to a local cache?

Post by daniel347x »

Hello -

I am attempting to set up SyncBack Pro to *backup* my files in my OneDrive mapped drive to other destinations for redundancy.

I want to utilize 'offline files' for OneDrive so that *many* (not all) files are NOT locally cached (i.e., I do not use them frequently).

I am concerned that this might not work with SyncBack Pro without filling up OneDrive's local cache with unchanged files: Will the use of SyncBack Pro itself *trigger a download of files to the local cache*?

I could see two ways this might occur:

(1) If the file is present on OneDrive (as an offline file) but NOT in the SyncBack backup location, I assume the file will be downloaded into OneDrive's local cache so that SyncBack may then copy it into the backup. This is expected behavior.

(2) If the file is present on *both* OneDrive (as an offline file) *and* in the SyncBack backup location (unchanged), I am concerned that when SyncBack just CHECKS the file during standard timed runs of the backup, this act alone will (unnecessarily) cause every offline file on OneDrive to be downloaded by OneDrive to the local cache. This is behavior that will render SyncBack not usable for my purposes with OneDrive.

I would like to know if the situation (2) exists, or if I'm OK and I can proceed with backing up offline files from OneDrive without risk that unchanged files on OneDrive will be downloaded into OneDrive's local cache during the SyncBack backup process.

Thanks!

Hi,

I conducted some tests with SyncBackPro, the OneDrive offline files were not downloaded during the scan phase. I suggest testing with a test folder and files to see if it works?

Thank you.
