Couple questions about copying/deleting files during backup

Post by kling_clang »

I had some backup images of my music dvds all in one folder. Since the last backup, I sorted those backup images into folders by band. When I did the next backup, syncback, no longer finding the backup images where they had been, deleted all of my backup images from the destination, and re-copied them (into the new folder structure i'd created)

This is normal - but, if syncback had scanned the files differently, it would have found those same images existing on the destination, and could have just created the new directory structure, and moved them into it.

It took 6 hours to re-copy the backup images, whereas just moving them into the new folders would have taken 5 minutes tops. I was left wishing I had just moved the images into new folders on both the source & destination.

Thoughts on this appreciated :xmas)

Hi,

Only Intelligent Synchronization profile in SyncBackSE/Pro has an optional setting 'Detect file renames on Left/Right' under:

Modify Intelligent Synchronization profile > Expert > Decision-Files settings page

to detect moved/renamed files, as it maintains a 'state-database' (history) of which files were there last time, and what their names were etc., to detect the possible renamed/moved candidates.

Please refer to these forum posts for more details:

http://www.2brightsparks.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=8619

http://www.2brightsparks.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=11425

Also, as explained in this forum post:

http://www.2brightsparks.com/bb/viewtop ... =18&t=8617

Files that have been 'edited and also renamed/moved' and files that have been 'moved and renamed' will not be detected by a Intelligent Synchronization profile.

Since a Mirror (or Backup profile) does not create a 'state-database', SyncBackSE assumes that the restructured files on your destination are ‘Destination only’ files - therefore deletes them (from destination) and recopies again to the same file/folder structure as in the Source.

Thank you.
