SyncBack - Mirror + Backup?

Post by jmorgannz »

Hi all,

I use SyncBackSE for my backups and have done for years.
I have a SyncBack profile set up which mirrors my entire PC to my NAS once per week.

Once throughout those years I had an issue whereby I had deleted a file on my PC, and I wanted to recover it from the backup - however unfortunately the backup had run the very previous day.
This ticked me off; so I modified the profile so that files deleted on my PC would not be removed from the backup until they were at least 60 days old.

This has worked great although it can balloon backup size in some instances when lots of files are added/removed at once.

However; I have recently realised that this is going to make recovery if I ever lose my main PCs drives a concern - because although all files on my PC are backed up to the NAS - the NAS copy also includes stuff that is no longer on my PC for up to 60 days - with no way to tell which is which.

This is easting at me - as the backup becomes 'unclean' and does not represent the state of my PC as at time of backup.

However I do find the ability to retain removed files for a length of time as highly useful.

Seems I am trying to achieve two different purposes here - and am wondering if anyone has any input on how I can configure SyncBackSE to achieve both of those goals:
  • A clean 1:1 copy of my PC as at time of backup run
  • The ability to save removed files for x number of days in case I delete something by accident and need to restore it after the above has run.
Can SyncBackSE do this? Its very configurable.
I am on V8.9.7.0
