Monthly Re-Scan takes hours

Post by CTreffler »

Hello,

I'm using 'Fast backup' to perform backups of my Families PCs to my NAS over a VPN connection. The connection method is a simple network login after establishing the VPN.
Once a month there will be a re-scan and I notice that this takes a huge amount of time and transferred data. I see on the VPN statistics that over the last 5 hrs. 1.7GB of data have been transferred from destination (NAS) to source (PC), while at the same time only 180MB of Data have been transferred to the destination. Most likely it is still scanning.

I guess the reason for the slowness of the process is the addition of compression and versioning. There will not be a big amount of files with different versions.
The compression is set to 'no compression'. It is used in order to encrypt the data.

So is there any way to speed this up?

How big is the risk of corrupt data, if there are no re-scans for a long time?

Does the re-scan require the decompression of the stored backups? Is there a way to avoid this?
Is there another method to encrypt which would be faster?

Does versioning have a huge impact?

Thanks in advance,

If the backup data is compressed, the software might need to decompress the backup files to compare them with the source. Since you mentioned using no compression but encryption, decompression shouldn't be necessary.

You can check whether the software is indeed decompressing files during the re-scan. If this is happening, switching to an uncompressed format might help, but it seems like compression is already disabled.
