Backing up large Outlook files remotely

Post by dwalker59 »

I presume that 2BrightSparks can't comment on future plans, but ... I hope you are thinking about remote differential backup, like RSync, which uses file checksums to send the changed portion of files to a remote FTP server.

Now that Syncback R6 does such a good job with remote SSH servers, and with cloud servers, here's hoping that they will do an remote differential backup soon.

There is really no good way to remotely back up user PST files from Outlook, which often approach or exceed 2 GB in size.

The older versions of Outlook would corrupt the PST file when it exceeded 2 or 4 GB, I forget which; now that that limit has been fixed, Outlook PST files that I see routinely get very large. Even if users correctly archive their old Outlook items, that just means that the "Archive.pst" file gets very large (but only a small part of it has been changed). The main Outlook.pst file can still be pretty large.

I have tried several remote backup programs that can (theoretically) do this. I'm currently using one of them, but it has some issues -- and I would much rather keep all of my remote backups within Syncback.

At least, 2BrightSparks, please tell us not to despair, that you understand the need for a way to remotely back up large files where only a part of the file has changed, like Outlook PST files. Thanks!

Yes, it's on the ideas list. I can't say any more than that.

How's the list progressing?

Trying to determine if 10GB pst files backed up to Backblaze B2 will run in minutes or hours every night :)
