How Many Profiles Do I need

SyncBackFree is the freeware version of SyncBack. It is *not* an evaluation version of SyncBackPro/SE.

How Many Profiles Do I need

Post by neil154 »

I have 2 USB drives that I use to backup my files, I alternate backing up every other week, The files I backup are exactly the same. I take 1 USB to an offsite site and then rotate which one is offsite. Since I am backing up the exact same files but to different USB drives do I need separate profiles for each USB drive or if I use 1 profile will SyncBack Free not properly know what was previously backed to this specific USB drive

Thank you for the response but I am still a little confused. In my case the USB Drive Names are USB1 & USB2. I put USB1 in and ran a simulated sync for USB2 and is seemed to work fine just as if I had put in USB2. I would think that there is a database someplace that would see that this is the wrong USB and give me a message.

Please help me understand where I am going wrong

Hi,

At a guess, you might have created two different profiles to backup files to USB 1 and USB 2. If so, I would suggest you to use serial number instead of label (or drive letter) to connect and backup files to the correct external drive (Note that when you run the profile, SyncBack will find the drive letter itself by asking Windows what matches that serial number. It does not use any internal database to do this). You can refer to this KB article on how to use %SERIAL% variable in your destination path:

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... en-unknown

In addition, please note that the profile run will simply fail if the correct drive with that matching serial number is not found.

Thank you.

You are correct and I created 2 different profiles one for each USB drive. I do not know what a serial number on a drive means but I do know about label. When I am in File Explorer the drives show up as syncdrive1 and syncdrive2.

I then went into the profile for USB2 and tried putting in %LABEL=syncdrive2% and got message that the label does not exist, I also tried %LABEL=syncdrive2%\backup and got the same message. I am trying to put this info in the space just to the left of where it says "Alternates".

I would appreciate more assistance since it sounds like if I can follow your instruction it will do exactly what I want.

Hi,

Unfortunately, %LABEL% and %SERIAL% variables are not supported in SyncBackFree (hence the message %LABEL=xxx% does not exist. But these variables are supported in SyncBackSE/Pro (Sorry, forgot to mention about this in my last post).

With SyncBackFree, you can connect to an external drive using a drive letter. However, if Windows assigns a different drive letter to your external drive when it is plugged-in then the profile run might fail (as it does not match with the drive letter defined in your profile).

If you want you can test with SyncBackSE/Pro, which we offer a free 30-day evaluation. You can download and install latest version of SyncBackSE/Pro from here:

http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html

If you do decide to purchase, the serial number will convert the 'trial' to the 'registered' version.

Thank you.

Thanks again for the response. So now I am using SyncBackPro but still have questions.

I put in %LABEL=syncback1% and %LABEL=syncback2% in each of the profiles and it was accepted. I then ran the profile of USB1 with the thumb drive USB and it worked. I then tried running the USB2 profile on USB1 and it seemed to work it did not give me any error message so I am confused. So please explain what I am doing wrong because I assume there is a database some place which keeps track of what has previously been copied to each side and this would mess things up (is this accurate assumption)?

Since I am using these thumb drives for backup on a rotating basis, is it your recommendation that I use the label command or do you believe that I only need 1 profile?

Also, since I am using the thumb drives for backup the information on them is never wanted over the PC and therefore I am then telling SyncBackPro to mirror the PC. Is there a way to make mirroring as the normal in the profile rather than checking it each time.

Finally, when I did click on mirroring I then saw where it said to "use the details of the PC" in the copying. What does it mean "use the details of the PC"?

Hi,

Please submit a support ticket with your profile configurations (profile 1 and profile 2) by using the Contact Support link in this article (as it is easier to follow up):

Do not post your profile configuration on this open forum.

Thank you.
