Left or Right?

Post by Tim Frost »

I have noticed that when I set up a SyncBack Touch operation in SyncBack Pro (both latest version), the copy from a drive on the Touch machine to a NAS device correctly shows with the Left/Source as the Touch machine, and the NAS as the Right/Destination in the main window. But on the screen to confirm the actions, they appear as Right/Source and Left/Destination, and all the backups are shown as moving from right to left.

I find this extremely confusing and counterintuitive. What can be done to correct it? Even if there was some weird reason to show Touch operations differently, it makes no sense for the confirmation window to be the opposite way round from the main window.

Hi,

The reason for this in SyncBack any non-standard resource (SyncBack Touch, Cloud, FTP etc.,) use a plug-in, and the socket for the plug-in is only on the 'right-hand-side' of the code. So, when you create a profile to backup files from a non-standard resource, we have to re-wire the profile, so that it maintains this orientation (non-standard resource on right side) and data is set to flow from right to left to achieve this. More details about this are explained in this KB article:

Thank you.

I'm also having this issue with MTP, and I also find it extremely confusing/counterintuitive. It makes it significantly more cumbersome to scan through the differences window because none of the columns are laid out properly, as they are for all the other profiles.

After reading the KB article, if it's impractical to update the code so it's actually implemented to reflect what's going on (i.e. to be able to have plug-ins on the left as well as the right), and if the code is hacked to have the plugin on the right & internally flip the direction of data flow, it seems like the UI of the differences window could also be hacked to show things properly. This is clearly what's been done in some places, i.e. Configuration->Simple page. I see no reason it wouldn't also be doable on the Differences window. Although (as a software developer myself) I'm never really a fan of the "hack-and-bandaid" approach, if this is the approach that's been taken, it would at least resolve the frontend usability issues with this type of configuration.

(Note: the article says "Note also that the icon in the Type column has the arrow (direction) reversed, showing it is copying Right to Left. " That actually seems not to be the case - the arrow there shows the correct, user-configured left-to-right direction).
