Can syncback do these?

Post by bhwong »

We have some file-base weekly backup of about 500GB each and this is a waste of storage space as most of them are duplications. Thus, we are looking for a utility that can do these:

Merge all backup sets into 1 single set with:

1. duplicated files removed

2. modified files auto-rename with modified date added into their filenames. Only the latest version will retain it's original filename.

3. deleted files added into 1 zip file per folder.

And able to handle potential problems:

1. Non-english or even invalid file or folder name by auto-renaming into valid file or folder name or prompting for new name input from users.

2. auto shorten or move subfolders into new main folder for invalid file or folder name due to character exceeding limitation in the new storage

Hi
As per your parallel Contact Form, no, sorry. Our software does not offer Merge facilities. Nor do we ever at any time change filenames, except as part of a transfer to/from FTP when certain characters need translating because they are 'valid/legal' in one file-system but not in the other (e.g. Unix versus Windows). However, that simply involves character-substitution, not truncation, nor appending time-stamps or similar.

If you have further or follow-up questions, please post here in the forum, so all users can get the benefit of the exchange, thanks. (Also, that avoids duplicated effort)

Hi Dave,

2brightsparks has no intention to add this very useful feature and maybe sell it as Syncback Enterprise etc?

So does anyone here know of such helpful utility? I can't believe no one thought of this feature before. :(

Can syncback smart enough to understand a moved file so that it does not delete and re-transfer a file but just move the file on the local storage to match the remote storage?

Is it possible to sync a huge storage for 2 offline sites with just a small capacity portable storage? Only new and modified files are transferred to the portable storage with proper path to be sync with the remote site. This will beat dropbox sync functionality.

No - you cannot compare two locations and 'pipe' the differences to a third location. Profiles are strictly two-sided.

BTW (forgot to mention on the previous occasion).

As stated at the 'entrance', this forum is

An area of the forum to post ideas for new products or discuss things that are not related to 2BrightSparks products

and is thus clearly not for posting questions about 'SyncBack' (any version) which is of course an existing 2BS product. If you have future questions, please post in the appropriate forum for either Pro, SE or the freeware. If nothing else, it may help tell us which version you mean, although it helps if you actually state that in the post (also the version number) if you hope for an accurate reply.

Hi Dave

1. Why is ideas not meant for your existing products since my requests are ideas that do not currently available within your existing products?

2. You give the impression that 2BrightSparks is not interested to provide customers what they really need and prefer to produce new apps targetting new customers rather than improving existing apps to retain existing customers?

3. FYI, there are now plenty of competitors on sync apps and some are superior to syncback pro without any cost. Many previous syncback customers are migrating to the free and better sync. For example: [competitor link deleted] and [competitor link deleted] are able to do some of our requested features but not all.

4. Still searching for an truly comprehensive sync app that is smarter than existing primitive sync apps.

Regards,
Boon Hong.

Your latest post was not openly suggesting added features, it was asking if they were already available now. Thus, it should have been posted in the appropriate forum for the exact version (because the answer might be version-dependent). The forum you posted in is for ideas on new products, not new features.

Check our change log for the number of new features added, mainly c/o user's suggestions, the vast majority of them free. However, as a commercial company with staff & bills to pay, we could not keep adding stuff for free indefinitely. Suggestions are always welcome, and nowhere did I state they were not, only that you should post them in the correct place, (and/or phrase them as suggestions, not questions) and provide the correct information if 'asking'.

But bear in mind that some suggestions are not practical because of the basic design (such as bilateral design versus multi-lateral) and the amount of work required to achieve the opposite compared with the likely sales. Plus, we simply cannot add everything we are asked for immediately - we do not have the resources.

Good luck on your search - I doubt you will find anything that 'pleases all of the people all of the time', but you may well find something that suits your current requirements better
