Problem caused by \Dropbox\.dropbox.cache\.canary

SyncBackFree is the freeware version of SyncBack. It is *not* an evaluation version of SyncBackPro/SE.

Problem caused by \Dropbox\.dropbox.cache\.canary

Post by Lup1n2023 »

Hello.

My scheduled backups were working perfectly until earlier this month (5 March) when Windows introduced a Dropbox update. Since then each backup, whether scheduled or manual, has resulted in failure and the reason given is:

\Dropbox\.dropbox.cache\.canary
Failed to copy from Source : Cannot copy file (395): Access to the cloud file is denied

Does anyone have any idea how I might resolve this?

I have tried deleting Dropbox from our desktop PC but can't seem to get rid of it fully as the problem has remained on subsequent backups.

I would be extremely grateful for any advice on fixing this.

The date in this Dropbox article is perhaps the date you referred to. While I cannot offer a solution to your problem maybe this information will help you figure it out if you were using Dropbox Vault folders.

"Dropbox is discontinuing Vault to focus on improving existing security features and building new capabilities around advanced data protection, with Vault folders automatically converting to standard Dropbox folders on March 4th, 2025.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Reason for Discontinuation:
Dropbox is discontinuing Vault to concentrate its efforts on enhancing its overall security infrastructure and developing new technologies for advanced data protection.
Timeline:
Starting March 4th, 2025, Dropbox Vault will no longer be available, and any files currently in the Vault folder will automatically be moved to a standard Dropbox folder.
No PIN Required:
After the conversion, you will no longer need a PIN to access the files that were previously in the Vault, as they will become part of your regular Dropbox folder.
User Feedback:
Some users have expressed their dissatisfaction with this decision, citing the convenience of having a separate secure space for sensitive data.
Alternative Security:
Dropbox emphasizes its commitment to providing secure storage and states that it is focusing on improving its existing security features and building new capabilities around advanced data protection."

Hello and thank you very much for your reply.

Although I don't quite understand everything in the Dropbox article, it is really helpful to have this to pass on to someone who might be able to help me solve the backup problem. For one thing, I never knew we were using Dropbox Vault folders as opposed to standard Dropbox folders. The only thing we ever used Dropbox for was transferring photos from a smartphone to our PC: we didn't choose to use Dropbox but the phone seemed to automatically use it.

Thank you again for your super-quick reply. I didn't get an email from the forum, as I did in the past, alerting me to a reply to my question. So I didn't think anyone had replied and am very pleased to find your message this evening.
